Halloween – Louis Ghost Chair by Philippe Starck

On this the night of Halloween when the ghosts and ghouls abound and our quiet suburban streets echo to the sounds of “Trick or Treat”…

One chair should take their pride of place at the head of the All Hallows Day feastPhilippe Starck’s iconic Ghost chair.

It was designed in 2002 in Italy for Kartell. Using a really innovative manufacturing method, at the time, the chair was created from a translucent injection molded poly-carbonate (previously used to create dome lights and water bottles), Starck created the most recognizable chair of the 21st century.

Its design is based on the baroque style Louis XV armchair. With his famed twist he took a modern material and added the contrast of the classic shape. Almost overnight (and I imagine due to its versatility) it began to appear in homes and offices everywhere. Then the big commercial hire firms began to offer it as a wedding seating option. Its iconic status was cemented.

It is surprisingly comfortable, lightweight and great for people who live in small spaces with a need for visual lightness that this chair offers.

They aren’t cheap and many would argue that it makes for an unattractive sight to see people sitting in it from behind…

So Trick or Treat time…

When you look at it does it convey a sense of an upmarket, fun design or do you just see cheap plastic?
