Previously Earth Hour has been about encouraging people to turn off their lights and other non essential electrical devices for the hour. Through this act it symbolically brings people together by committing to a mutual goal. It was started here in Australia in 2007 and had become the world’s largest mass participation event in history.

This year, Earth Hour is all about motivating people to go beyond the hour, by doing things that help the planet every day.The organisers teamed up with Leo Burnett Singapore and have developed the 60+ iPhone app.

The idea of the app is to inspire action by providing a list of simple acts that users can perform to help the planet. After taking part, users can log their acts right away to earn achievements, which will then be shared among their friends on their social networks. The app also tracks individual and global contributions, leading to an Earth Hour that goes beyond geographical borders as well.

The design of the app is a wonderful example of sustainable design, upcycling and eco-friendly thinking, as the entire interface was created out of discarded cardboard boxes and paper. Everything was drawn by hand, and even the badges were hand-sewn.
