What is the difference between an Interior Designer and an Interior Decorator?

In an effort to be precise I browsed an online dictionary and searched “Interior Decorator” to which it helpfully suggested I look under “Interior Designer”.  Thank you for that invaluable insight.

To be fair they aren’t the only people struggling to pidgeon hole these roles.  Today the terms “Interior Design” and “Interior Decoration” are used by a lot of people interchangeably for the same job. In America it is a lot easier to differentiate between the two because you have to be certified to call yourself an Interior Designer. In Australia it can be quite confusing to tell the two roles apart.

In my opinion, the simplest way to understanding the two roles is that the Interior Designer will start by looking at the interior structure of the space, whereas an Interior Decorator works within an existing space to improve its aesthetic and functional appeal.

The Designer will be able to custom design furniture and lighting to truly tailor the area to its full potential.

Both will work with colour, soft furnishings, furniture, space planning and item sourcing.
