The Dami Series by Seung-Yong Song

“Truly elegant design incorporates top-notch functionality into a simple, uncluttered form.”
David Lewis (20th century philosopher)

If your Korean is a little rusty, let me help you out, Dami means “put in”.

It is also the name for the latest work by South Korean industrial designer Seung-Yong Song.

His vision was to blend modern objects with traditional beauty.

This work was launched as part of the Seoul Design Living Fair 2012 exhibition “Nature in Daily Life”.

I am a big fan of the clean lines and soft curves.

If you had to hazard a guess on his inspiration would you have said woven baskets?

Actually Seung-Yong Song said the inspiration came from the traditional Korean barbecue grill.

He has worked really hard to create a modern yet sustainable design.

Each piece is made from a combination of a new eco-friendly material called Valchromat and a CNC processing technique (which is basically computer controlled stamping presses that punch out the shape).

So, I hear you ask, what is Valchromat and what makes it green?

In simple terms it is a wood fibre board. The wood is sourced from forest waste, residue from timber mills and recycled pine. The manufacturing process is very environmentally friendly and the production site has zero carbon emissions. During manufacture, organic dyes are added along with a specifically developed binding resin to create the strength whilst maintaining a natural appearance.

I find it inspiring when I see a designer attempt the near impossible.
And I cheer wholeheartedly when they succeed!

I think these designs are a huge success – sustainably produced, beautifully designed and with multiple potential uses.
