Phoenix Roadster by Kenneth Cobonpue & Alberth Birkner: The first biodegradable car design

When it comes to progress the hardest part is often that first step. When you think of the automotive industry it’s unlikely that the words “sustainability” and “hand crafted” spring to mind. Imagine if that was all to change.

What’s that I hear you say… Too hard! Impossible! It’ll never happen!

Well the highly talented Filipino designer Kenneth Cobonpue (famous for his incredible use of natural fibres like rattan) has teamed up with Alberth Birkner to take us on that first step.

Meet the Phoenix Roadster.

They have created a biodegradable shell that is formed around a bamboo spine and made out of a blend of rattan, bamboo, nylon and steel. I love the attention to detail by placing LED lights at the rear.

I am so excited to see that the car seats appear to be a take on one of Cobonpue’s famous designs – the Yoda chair

But back to the Roadster…
The sides can have glass installed and the shell can be customised to suit every height and build.

It is just a prototype with no engine, so you aren’t going to be sitting at the lights marvelling at it just yet… but now that this exciting first step has been taken I wonder how long before it becomes a reality.
